Fishing Report 04-07-09

The Steelhead fishing on The Ausable River has been good near Foote Dam.  The Steelies moved
up fast to the dam and now are starting to drop back. The Ice is off Foot Pond and that mean it
want be long before they get on the gravel. Weather looks good for the weekend!  I have had
alot of problems with my reports going through. I hope this makes it.  Update on Friday.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead fishing on the AuSable River is starting to pick-up!
Steelies are being caught in downtown Oscoda which means a
fresh run is moving up the river. The Foote Dam area is also
catching a few fish every morning.  The ice is off the ponds and Steelies
should be getting close to the gravel areas and even start spawning by
this weekend. Plus Water temps. will be just right for this weekend to
get things started for the anglers who fish the gravel runs.
Ok  just got word that a nice 10# hen was caught at Boy Scout this morning
and the eggs were loose and spilling out.  Good sign they are starting to get on the
gravel. Ok! that's it for now.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

Steelhead fishing on the AuSable River slow going for the folks fishing from
the bank. A few are being caught a Foote dam every morning and at
Rea road ramp. Spawn and wax worms working the best. Water is high
but fishable. The Steelies are still in the deeper holes. The good news is
the boaters are doing very good in the lower part of the AuSable from
Whirlpool Down. Spawn working the best and few have been caught
on plugs. Last Saturday 14 boats put in at my ramp and 10 boats caught
fish. Two or more for each boat. Not bad! Then came Sunday,
bright sunny day. Eight boats put in and eight boats got skunked!?
We are expecting more rain this week and water levels should remain
high through this weekend. For the anglers who are waiting for the
ice to come off the ponds it looks like about 10 days give or take a few.
I'll put another posting out by the in of this week.

The DNR will be planting 150,000 Steelhead this year at my ramp. The
first load was delivered yesterday (33,000) These are not Fingerlings.
Theses are 10 to 14 inches long which should help the survival rate.

I still looking for volunteers for the Cormorant control in the Lower
AuSable. The purpose is to guard the young Steelhead from the Cormorants
using pyrotechnics (bangers). This is for about a two week period the last
two weeks in April. If you are interested please call me at 989-739-5332.
Boaters or non boaters needed. That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

Ok! Now we have something to Talk about. Steelhead on the Ausable River
Is good! The hot spot this morning is the pier at the mouth of the AuSable.
At least seven fish were land and a lot of hook-ups. There is also white fish
and walleye being caught at the pier. Lots of anglers out there today!
The rain and higher water levels has really turn the fishing up a notch.
Spawn sacs, plastic egg clusters and spoons working the best for the
Steelies. Countdown Rapala working good for the Walleyes. For the white
fish single eggs and wax worms.  We should see these Steelies move up
the river and fishing should be good this week.

Tawas Bay is good for white fish and walleye. The White fishing is just
starting and should only get better. Wax worms working the best for
the White Fish.  Perch fishing inside the Harbor as been good also.
Minnows working the best for the Perch. Ok! that's it for know.

Thanks! and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

Ok! My first fishing report in a long time. So here goes. Salmon fishing
still spotty in the AuSable River. But there Salmon coming in.  The cold
weather has pushed a few fish on the gravel at the High Banks and you
can see about 10 to 12 fish working the gravel. Best fishing is early
morning or at night for best results. Spawn sacs and flies working
the best. Once the the Salmon drop a few eggs I expect the Steelhead
fishing to start. This should start as early as next week.
If you plan on fishing the AuSable move around a little bit and you will find
those 2's and 3's grouped together. Not alot of fishing pressure so they will
be all yours to work.  That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

Steelhead Fishing on the AuSable River has been spoty at best. There are just
a few on the gravel at the High Banks and at the Boy Scout. Below Foote Dam
is about the same few caught everyday. But the ones that are being caught are
fresh silver fish. Hopefully this rain today and Friday push more Steelies up the
AuSable onto the gravel just in time for the weekend. Best catches have been
on flies and spawn sacs. The good news is that the Walleye fishing at mouth
of the AuSable as been very good. Rapala X Raps and Husky Jerk baits have
been working the best.  The Walleye opener is the weekend and the AuSable
is still full of eyes. So it should be a very good opener for the Anglers fishing
the River. Again this Friday the AuSable River Store will be open till 2:00 am.
For Those Anglers fishing for Walleye starting at Midnight. That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight LInes!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead fishing has been very slow on the AuSable River
for the first part of this week. But Wednesday there were
some nice catches reported from the lower and the upper parts
of the Ausable. I saw at least 4 fish that were over 10 Lbs. and
one just over 12 lbs.  More steelies are showing up! The water
temp. is 42 degrees so we should see steelies on the gravel today
and this weekend. The Conditions are good. Even the weather
will be very good.

The walleye fishing is good on the pier at night with the right wind
condtions. Anglers are catching the eyes on Rapala X Raps,
Husky Jerks, and Countdowns.

Another hot spot is the Tawas River Mouth. Anglers are doing
good just after dark. Best catches have been on Rapala X-Raps.
That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead on the AuSable River are starting to move on
the gravel. I Just had two Anglers in with two nice steelies
from the Highbanks. The one buck weighted 11.5 Lbs. Not
bad! Steelies are moving back and forth from the gravel and
back to the deeper holes. They have made a few reds but aren't
staying on top of the gravel long. The weather is most likely
the problem. (snow and windy) If we get a break with weather
the spawning process will begin. Anglers are catching a few
steelies at Foote Dam and around the Meat Hole area.
The weekend should be good if we have just a little help
with the weather. That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight lines!

Fishing Report

The cold weather has really shut down the Steelhead Fishing
on the AuSable River. There where a few Anglers at Foote
dam this morning and three steelies were caught. This weekend
will be a cold one but there are fresh steelies in the deeper holes.
Fishing will be spotty but Angler pressure is way down. Wax worms
and spawn sacs are working the best. That's it for now. I wish I
had more info but there is just not a lot of folks out fishing.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Just a update from the last report. Just had another boat angler
came in with five nice fresh steelies. All where caught on plugs
and thy also lost two fish on spawn.  We've got fresh Steelies moving
up the Ausable River!!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The steelhead fishing 0n the Ausable River as been good for the boat
anglers. Boaters are catching fish in the middle to upper sections of
the river fishing the deeper holes. Spawn sacs and plugs working the
best.  I can't say much about the bank anglers. Not alot of action from
the bank as of lately. This should improve as the steelies are getting
closer to the gravel areas and water levels are fishable. The Ice
on Foote Pond should be off by this weekend. This is a few days
earlier than last year. Fishing should improve for the weekend but
the weather maybe a factor.

The pier fishing as been fair for steelies. A few are being caught in
the early morning period. Spawn sacs working the best. Walleye fishing
at night is good. Rapala countdowns, X-Raps, and Husky Jerks all
are working. Ok that's it for know.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

There is very little change from the last report. Water levels remain high
but the water clarity is good in the upper AuSable. Saturday very
few steelies caught. The fishing is very spotty and steelies are in places
were normally you would not fish due to the high water. Look for Eddies
and slower water. Wax worms and Spawn sacs working the best.

The pier fishing at the mouth of the AuSable is also spotty. Anglers at the end
of the pier are catching a few in the early morning period.
That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The water level on the AuSable River is up from 9.5 ft to 12.26 ft. (Very High!!)
This is making Steelie fishing difficult and spotty fishing through out the Ausable
River. There were a few anglers at Foote Dam this morning and two winter steelies
were caught on wigglers and wax worms. That's all I've heard today. On Thursday
the boaters had a few fish. One Steelie was a nice Chromer caught in the low
section of the AuSable.  This weekend doesn't look that good due to the high water
condtions, but if it does go down fishing should be good. Look for fresh steelies
entering the river over the weekend. That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Ausable River had very high water over the weekend making Steelhead fishing
difficult at best.  The only Fish I hear caught were three fish on Sunday Afternoon
when the water level dropped.  There where a few anglers at Foote Dam today
but had on only one hook-up and that's it.  Warmer weather and rain is forecast
for the end of the week and should improve the fishing. (I hope so!)

The  Pier fishing at the mouth of the AuSable for steelhead has been slow. High
water and windy condtions have made it tough going. Sunday night there were
a group of anglers at the end of the pier fishing for Walleye and only one fish
was caught. So over all the fishing is slow.   That's it for now!  I'LL have another
report on Thursday.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The warm weather as pushed fresh Steelhead into the AuSable
River. Anglers are catching some nice chromers in the lower
sections of the river using wax worms and spawn sacs.
The upper AuSable (Dam Area) anglers are also catching Steelies
but most of these fish are winter fish. Most likely there will
be fresh fish in the upper by this weekend. Look for Steelies
in the deeper holes and log jams and hold on! Should be a
good weekend!
There are anglers on the end of the pier but I have no report
on the fishing yet.  It should be some action going on out there.
I'll let you know the next report. (This week) That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Ok! It's time to hit the AuSable River for Salmon. The fish are just
starting to get on the gravel in the upper part of the AuSable.
Also you will find fish in the deeper holes in the lower part of the
river. This cold front and rain has really helped push the fish into
the river. We seem to have more fish in the river than last year
at this time and fishing should be good this weekend. There is very
little fishing pressure so  the Salmon are that spooky.

The High Banks as alot of males hanging around and a few that
are fanning.  Flies and spawn/skein will work the best on the
gravel.  That's it for now!

If you need detailed info just give me a call and I will be glad
give you an update.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The AuSable River Steelhead is still good. Fresh chrome is still trickling
in. There are very few anglers fishing for steelies right now. So if you
are planning on a last Steelie trip to the AuSable you will find little to
no pressure on the fish. Flies and egg patterns working the best on
the gravel and in the deeper holes near the gravel.

Walleye fishing is fair to good on the lower AuSable. (Hit and miss)
Nightcrawlers working the best under a bobber or bouncing the bottom
with a corkie and a single hook. With all the rain we've had it should
improve.  That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead fishing on the AuSable River is good. Most of the
Steelies are on the gravel in the upper part of the river.  The High
Banks has been the hot spot. The Steelies are still trickling in
and fishing should be good through May. Flies and spawn working
the best.

Walleye season opens tonight at midnight. There has been a few
caught in the river by steelhead anglers. So there still eyes in the
river but they are on there way out to the big lake. The Pier fishing
is starting to pick-up and limits were reported on Thursday night.
It should be good for the opener in the lower river and the Pier!
Rapala X-Raps and Countdowns are working the best at the Pier.

Just to remind everyone I will be open until 2:00 AM tonight for the
Walleye opener. So drop by for all your river Supplies. Have a great
walleye opener!!

This a short update on the fishing from this morning on
the AuSable River. We had more fish come Last night

Fishing Report

The Steelhead on the AuSable River are on the gravel and fishing is fair to
slow. Steelies are just trickling in at a slow pace. Friday the river had
a fresh run of chrome come in. The rain and overcast condtion should
help and hopefully (big) push more fish up. Look for fishing to improve through
out next week. It looks like the run should go well into May. (Just like Last
year) Fish the gravel and the deeper holes close to gravel for staging fish
on the upper part of the river. Steelies are being caught on flies on the gravel
and wax worms in the deeper holes.

The Pier Fishing at the mouth of the AuSable is very Slow right now. I have
not hear of any good catches at all.  The Walleye are just about done with the
spawn and should start making there move toward lower part of the AuSable
and out to the Mouth By the opening of Walleye Midnight Friday.

Just to let you know I will be open for the Walleye opener until 2:00 AM
Saturday morning and reopening at 6:00 AM.  So Stop by or E-mail for a update
fishing report.  That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead Fishing on the Ausable River is picking up!
Steelies are being caught at Foote Dam and the Rea Road
DNR ramp. Most of the fish are being caught on wax worms
under a float or corkie off the bottom. A Few steelies are
on gravel and it seems more are showing up each day with
the rain and warm weather. So If you fish the gravel runs
fishing should be very good. There are alot of anglers up
already fishing High banks and the Boy Scout. Be prepare
for crowded condtions in these areas. Flies and spawn are
working the best.

The Pier at the Mouth of the AuSable is Just now catching
a few Steelies worth talking about. Spawn working the best.
Also there where two Browns 16# and 17# caught on Wednesday
and even a Altantic Salmon. So don't be suprise on what you
hook up with out there. (Your never know!)   The Walleye fishing
is slow. Rapala X Raps and Countdowns working the best.

This weekend should be good for Steelies on the AuSable River!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

The Fishing On the Ausable River is still slow but this should
improve. The ice on Foote Pond is off as of Tuesday and
the warmer temps should bring more Steelies up river.
Steelies should be in the deeper holes near the gravel and
maybe a few on the gravel by this weekend. Short report
today, but I just wanted to let folks know about the ice
is off Foote Pond. (This is a week earlier than last year)

Thanks and Tight Lines!

The Steelhead fishing on the Ausable River is spotty. Anglers
are catching a few steelies at Foote dam and the deeper
holes through out the river. Wax worms and spawn working
the best. The warmer weather and rain at the end of the
week should bring in more fish. If we get the rain fishing
should improve dramatically. Here are few photo's of some
nice Steelie's caught last week. Good Job Eric, Mark and

Fishing Report

The Steelhead fishing on the AuSable River has been slow/spotty.
This is mainly due to the high water conditions and wind. But the
water is on it's way down and conditions should improve.
There were 3 Steelies caught at Foote dam on Thursday and
3 Steelies caught just up from the Meathole. The Steelies were
caught on wax worms and spawn.  I did not hear of anyone
catching fish at the dam today. (bad day up there)

I also had two boats put-in today. One boat zeroed and the other
boat had two Steelies. I weighted the big one, it was 10# even.
These fish were caught on plugs in the Lower AuSable.

The report for the pier is a few fish are being caught. Sunday night
before the wind started blown two walleye, and two Steelies were
caught. The Eyes were caught on Rapala X Raps and the Steelies
caught on spawn. I have not had report from out there this week.
The wind has been wicked and cold. Hopefully the condtions will
improve for the weekend. Sunday looks like the best day.
Ok! that's it for now.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

I know Its been awhile on my reports but there hasn't been
much going on to report until now. The AuSable River water
level is high after all the rain we had last night. Anglers
are catching a few Steelhead in the lower AuSable on
spawn and wax worms. I had four boats put in today
and three of the four had a Steelie plus a lot of talk
about loosing a few. One of the boats tried to run plugs
but there was just to much trash coming down with
the high water to keep them working. The trash should
wash out by Saturday morning.

I had a truck spot this morning at Rea Rd. and while the
guys where loading their boat I talked to one angler who
already had two Steelies on his stringer. Nice fish!
Both fish where catch on wax worms with a pink corky.
So what I am seeing the Steelies are starting. ThIs weekend
should be good for fishing the Pier. Foote Dam, and any of
the deeper holes in between. Just never know the hot spot
this time of year but you may just find it!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The fishing for Steelhead on the AuSable River is spotty. A few
fish have been caught at the mouth and at Foote Dam. Most
of the fish are being caught on spawn sacs. The Steelies are
running a little late this year. (just like everything else)
The good news is the Ausable River water level is up from the
prevous weeks and for the folks asking about Van Ettan Lake
the drawdown is scheduled to start this weekend. This is about a
week later than last year. With the drawndown starting this
weekend this should bring more steelies into the river. I expect
the fishing will be good for this weekend!

Also there have be a few white fish and walleyes caught at the
mouth of the AuSable. White fish are just getting started!!
That's it for now.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

This weekend should be peak for Salmon fishing on the AuSable
River. There are good numbers of fish at the High Banks and folks are
catching them. The High Banks has been the hot spot all week
for Salmon. Most of the fish have been caught on single egg
and Glue eggs patterns. Also a few steelhead have been caught.
I expect more Steelehead will be showing up as the Salmon continue
to drop their eggs. It should be a mix bag of Salmon and Steelehead
caught this weekend. That's it for now!

I still have fresh Salmon for Sale if you need extra fish.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

The Salmon on the AuSable River are still coming in!
I had a chance to stand on the River Road Bridge today
for about 10 minutes before I had to run back to the
store and I counted 30 Salmon going up stream going
across the Sand.  So I know with that, plus the reports from
the dam and at High banks more fish are showing
up.

I guess one of the biggest questions is when will the
run peak? The run apears to be about 2 weeks behind
due to the warm weather (I think) This weekend
and next weekend should be good Salmon fishing and
then the Steelhead fishing should pick-up.

That's it for now. Got to go clean Salmon!

Thanks and Tight Lines

There were a few boats out today and the report is
folks are seeing more Salmon in the AuSable River
than they did the first part of the week.  Salmon
are through out the river System. Most of them are sitting
in the deeper holes and a few are working the gravel
spots up river. With the colder weather there should
be more coming in.  That all for now!

The Salmon on the Ausable River are now moving up the river!
We took a tour Sunday and saw Salmon on gravel making their
reds and alot more in the deeper holes behind the gravel.
All the well know spots had Salmon. There is not as many as
years pass but enough to get my attention. So this coming
weekend should be good fishing for Salmon and maybe
a steelhead or two. I'll post another report on Thursday this week.

Just to let you folks know I do have fresh Michigan Salmon for
sale if you need to take few extra fish home.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

The Salmon are finally in the AuSable River!! We had alot of rain on
Sunday and the water level is high and a little dirty. Just what we
needed to bring them in. The fish are mostly in the low AuSable but
there are fishing in the upper part of the AuSable and expect more
fish will be going up this week. Fishing for Salmon through out the
AuSable River should be good this weekend. (or sooner).
If you need more detail please call or e-mail.

Fishing Report

Ok! Here is a Salmon fishing report for the AuSable River. The
Salmon are being caught at the mouth of the AuSable with some
success. There are quite a few hook-ups and just a hand
full landed in the early morning. As fars the lower AuSable River
there is none really to speak of.  But we are exspecting rain Thursday
and Friday. This should start some fish moving into the lower AuSable.
I'll be watching everyday and I'll get another report out once I see
something happening.

Folks fishing from the pier head are catching them on
Barramundi Maulers, glow K O Wobblers, Rapala Jointe J-13's.
But the best lure is the new Rapala X Rap. The X Rap has a
completely different wiggle than any other lure I have seen
and neither have the fish. Give it a try! That's it for now.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

Well it's been a while since my last report but it's been
busy trying to get ready for the canoe season. Plus fishing
bass tournaments on the weekends. So I'll try get something
out every two weeks until Salmon start their run into the AuSable
River.

The Catfish fishing is really good at the mouth on the AuSable
River. Most of the catches are at night and nightcrawlers on
the bottom are working the best. The only problems is you
will have to weed through the Sheephead to get to the Cats.

Walleye fishing at the mouth is fair to good. Most catches
are just before dark and early morning hours. Rapala X Raps
and jig heads tipped with Plastic Jerk baits worked on the
bottom working the best.

Panfish on Foote and Cooke Pond is fair to good. The Gills
are on the beds and you can find good action in the back
of coves in one to two feet of water. Red worm and nightcrawlers
working the best. Also below any of the dams in the slack
water is holding good numbers of gills.

Van Etten Lake is fair for for Walleye trolling near drops and
around the island with crawler harnesses.

Ok! my favorite, the bass fishing has been good on Foote and
Cooke. Bass are off the beds and are starting to hit top water
baits early in the morning. Try tube baits on the drops later in the day.

Well that's it for know. If you need addtional info  please e-mail me or
call. I will be glad to answer your questions.

Thanks! and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead Fishing on the AuSable River is not over yet!
I had some good reports from High Banks and Foote Dam. There were
only 6 to 7 anglers at each location today and everyone had a
few hook-ups and a few anglers did get there limits. It seems more
fish are on the gravel than any point that I have seen in the last
couple of weeks. The steelies have been spotted on gravel fanning
and more are just moving around going back and forth into the deeper
holes. There were a few fresh chromers but most of the fish are
dark.  Flies and single eggs patterns working the best.
We expecting some rain and colder temps this weekend and
steelhead fishing should be good.  So don't put that rod up Yet!

If your planning a trip up to the AuSable and need a update
before the weekend please e-mail or call.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

This past weekend fishing Steelhead on the AuSable River was
what I would call spotty. The Steelies were spooky due to all
the fishing  pressure. But there were a few anglers that broke
away from the crowds and did manage to take a few nice
Steelies.  Flies and wax worms working the best.
Today fishing pressure is down and more fish are moving up
on the gravel in the upper AuSable.
There are alot of anglers that stop fishing when May arrives
so fishing pressure should be down.  The Steelhead fishing
should be good at at least for the next couple weeks.

The Walleye fishing opener this past weekend was also spotty.
A few fish were taken by the boaters in the lower AuSable.
I did not hear of any great catches off the piers either. The
ones that were caught and I cleaned were full of Smelt.
Walleye fishing should improve with the warmer weather this
weekend and Smelt around the rocks. Best bet is Rapala's and
glow jerk shads.  Well thats it for now.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead fishing on the AuSable River is heating up!
Steelies are being caught or should I say anglers are hooking
up with good success at Foote Damn and down to Rea Rd.
Fish are also moving on the gravel at the High Banks and Boy Scout.
Brown Flies, egg patterns and wax worms working the best.
It seems more silver fish are moving up so fishing should be very
good this weekend. It only mid-week and there are alot of anglers
all ready up getting in on the action. So with that in mind be prepared
if you plan on fishing the well know gravel runs.

The Walleye fishing is also good on the Piers. Folks are catching them
on Rapala's and plastic jerk baits jigged on the bottom.

The Walleye season opens for inland lakes at Midnight Friday night and
the river still has a lot of wallies up river. It should be a good opener in
the river.  I expect some nice catches coming in after midnight.
Good luck to all you walleye anglers!

That it for now, but I do have a photo below from Kelly Neuman on his
catch yesterday. Nice!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead fishing on the AuSable River has been good to fair.
Fish are still being taken at Foote Dam to the Rea Road DNR ramp.
Wax worms or Single egg patterns working the best.

I took a little tour to the High Banks and Boy Scout hole and a few steelies
are on beds but not alot.  Most of the fish in these areas are still in the
deeper holes near the gravel. Water temp. today is at 49 degrees and
more fish should be moving up on the gravel. The down side to this is
the weather forecast for this weekend. 4" to 7" of snow
is the forecast along a windy conditions.  I don't know how this will
effect the fish but I know the anglers will have more problems with
the weather than the fish. Hopefully I will have some good reports
from the weekend?

The walleye and Steelhead fishing off the pier has been spotty.
But good catches have been caught. Just got to be there when
ther coming in. Early Morning and late nights are the best times.
I did have one customer with a nice limit of Walleye caught at the
mouth trolling chartreuse Hot-n-Tots. This was in the middle of the
day. (right time right place?)

Just to let you know the AuSable River Store will be open till 2:00 AM
opening night (Friday) and until 10:00 PM Saturday night for the Walleye
opener 04-30-05. If your in the area drop by for the latest fishing report.
It should be a good one in the river! That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

Fishing on AuSable River for Steelhead has slowed down compared
to last weekend. Steelies are still being caught at the damn and
the Rea Road area but catches are down. (plus very few fishermen)
The good news is the ice is off Foote Pond and the temps should
go up quickly. By the weekend fish should be moving into the
deeper holes  close to gravel and yes a few fish will be on gravel
in the upper AuSable. Steelies have been sited fanning then
running back to deeper water.

The Pier fishing at the mouth is also slow for steelies and Walleye.
This mainly due to the 20 mph east to northeast winds. Burr!!
Well That's it for now.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

I am getting reports in from anglers with some good catches of
steelhead from the Damn down to the Rea Road DNR
ramp On the AuSable River. Steelies are being caught on wax
worms and spawn.

Boaters are still doing good in the lower and upper part
of the river fishing the deeper holes using plug.

The pier in Oscoda is also doing good for Steelhead mostly
early in the morning. (real early) Steelies are being caught
on spawn bags. A few walleyes are being caught at night
and early morning hours. Wallies are hitting Rapala's.

With warming temps fishing should just get better each
week and it looks like the ice on the ponds should be
off by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Maybe
earlier. Ok that's it for now.

Thanks and Tight lines!

Fishing Report

I said that I would get a report out today so here it is but short.
No change from yesterday but more fish have move up river.

Here's photo of Ray and Linda Page from yesterday.
Nice catch! (see 03/31/05 report)

Fishing Report

The gates at foote Damn are open and the water is high but
a few Steelhead are being caught in the AuSable River.

The pier fishing is good when the weather permits (wind).
Casting Spawn bags from the Pier or trolling the mouth with
Rapala's have been working the best. Here's  a Steelie trolling
March 24th:

The upper and lower AuSable now have fresh fish coming in
due to the run off and high water condtion. Today boaters
floating down from Rea to the store limited out (6 steelies)
4 fish caught in the upper part and 2 in the lower. These
were all caught on Willy's Worm crankbaits. I will post a
picture Friday.

I don't have a report from the damn or the meat hole today
but hopfully I'll have one Friday. When we did our spots
today there where only a few cars there?

Until Friday Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

Well This fishing report is different from last week! The Steelhead
fishing on the lower AuSable River is picking up!!
I Just had one boat come in with a couple limits of Steelhead.
The fish were a mix of  winter and nice fresh chromers.
From talking to these folks there were fish in just about every
deep hole and all these fish were taken on spawn bags.

There has also been steelhead and a few walleye being caught
at the mouth of the AuSable. Try spawn bags for the steelhead
and Rapala's for the Walleyes.

It seems this weekend is going to be a good weekend for either
Steelhead in the river or Eyes at the mouth.

If you need addtional info please e-mail me or call. I will be
glad to answer your questions.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Fishing for Steelehead on the AuSable River was slow.
The boats that went out over the weekend only had two
fish combine. These two fish were caught on spawn in the
lower AuSable. (one of these was a nice fresh chromer)
Since then it has been cold! cold! with ice flows until about
noon in the lower. So there has not been a lot of folks out.

A few fish have been caught at the pier but again fishing
is slow. As soon as we have some warmer weather (above
freezing) fishing will pick-up. Hopefully real soon!!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

I know it's been a while since the last report but there hasn't been
a lot of anglers out. So here's the first report of the year.
If you haven't heared the railroad trestle is out! A box car
derailed and hit the trestle. The derailment has blocked the river
for the last 4 days preventing boats from passing through.
As of today the the trestle is clear and boats and anglers
can now get through. The new tressel should be in place
within 8 to 10 days. (see the picture below wow!!).

Ok know for the report. There as been some action above
Whirlpool for Steelhead. Most of the success has been by
boaters drop back fishing with plugs in the deeper holes.
A few folks have caught fish below the dam on spawn and
wax worms but the going is slow from the bank.
The ice flows and shelfs are now gone and the river is clear.

Ice fishing:

Bluegill catches have been good on the lower landings on
Foote and Loon ship bay on Cooke with a few Crappie in the mix.
Catches for perch is starting to pick-up a little but you still have
to go through alot of small fish to get one for the bucket.

Thanks and Tight Lines

Fishing Report

The Steelhead fishing is still good on the Ausable River.
There are very few folks fishing but the ones that are
are catching fish. Fish are being caught up and down the
river.  Take a look at this nice catch from Sunday
(12-04-04). Gary Hartman and fishing parnter below.

Tight Lines and Thanks!

Fishing Report

The Steelhead fishing continues to be good on the
AuSable River. There is very little changes from last
weeks report but a few White Fish are running the river.

White fish have been caught accidently while
fishing for Steelhead in the upper AuSable.

The steelhead fishing should be good through the end of the month
if the weather cooperates.

The pier fishing for white fish is hit or miss. Good catches
one day and then nothing.

Well that's it for now.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The steelehead fishing on the AuSable River is really
starting to pick-up. Friday, there were two boats that
worked the low Ausable. One boat had 4 fish and the
other boat brought in 3 steelies. They were both working
crank baits into the current in the deeper holes.

The bank fisherman are doing good this week
fishing the deeper holes in the upper AuSable River.
Most of the catches are being caught on wax worms
or spawn bags.

Also there are a few White Fish being caught at the mouth of
the AuSable River.  Most of the fish are being caught on
single salmon eggs.

There are not alot of folks fishing right now. Most likely
getting ready for opening day of deer season.  So after
you get your buck you may want to try fishing the AuSable.
The weather forecast looks good for the next few days so
fishing should continue to be good on the AuSable River.

If you need any detailed information just e-mail me or
give me a call!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report
There has been good reports on the steelhead fishing on the
AuSable River. Folks have caught them all through the river
system. There is no real hot spot but the deeper runs
have produced the best.

The mouth of the river has been good.  Gold
and orange K.O. Wobblers working the best for
steelhead. Along with that, walleye are also being caught
on Rapala's. Up River spawn bags have been working
the best either drifting on the bottom or under a
float.  I have had a few boat put in during the week
and all of them had one or two fish in just a few hours
of fishing. The weather forecast is for cold temps' down
into the 30's so I would expect the fishing  to continue
to be good.

For those folks who have called the drawdown of Van Etten Lake will happen on November 6th. (this Saturday) One week earlier than expected.

Ok that all for now!

Thanks and Tight lines!

Fishing Report
Well the Salmon run is about over. There a few fish left
but are in bad shape. The good news is that there are
more Steelhead showing up in the Ausable River.

I have had a few boat put in here or take out at the
store and all had one or two fish. These fish are running
from 5 lbs. to 7lbs. (no big ones)  Most of these fish
were caught on spawn bags. The Steelhead are all
through the river system. (just got to move around
until you find them)

That's it for now!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

The Salmon are still on gravel in the upper part of the Ausable
River. Although it has passed peak there are still plenty of
fish. There are now steelies showing up in the river in the
deeper holes close to gravel feeding on the Salmon eggs.
Egg patterns or black stone flies have been working the best to
catch these Steelies or Salmon. It should be a good weekend
to catch either one!

If you need any addtional info please call or e-mail me.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report
The Salmon on the Ausable River are now up river on
gravel or close to gravel in the deeper holes. Thursday
folks brought in fish  that were all caught on flies.
These fish looked fresh only a few days in the river.
I will tell you that they are not stacked up like
cord wood but still plenty of fish around. We are
expecting rain and a hint of snow in the forecast
for this weekend and hopefully this will tell the story
whether or not more fish show up? (or is this it?)

The Salmon are dropping there eggs and steelies
should start showing up. I only saw two steelies
brought in this week. They were caught in the lower
part of the Ausable. Maybe by this weekend more will show up.

If you need more detail just let me know and I will be glad
to help.

Thanks and Tight lines!

The Salmon are on the move on the Ausable River. There are
Salmon at the dam and on beds at the High Banks. There are even a few Pink Salmon in the mix. There are still plenty of fish in the lower
river in the deeper holes. I expect this should be great weekend
for Salmon fishing. You can go anywhere and see fish but
catching them has been tough. Best bet for bait is spawn sacks
( or skien) and flies on the gravel.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report

There are now lots of Salmon in the lower part of the AuSable River in
the deeper holes. A few fish have been seen at the High Banks but
no fish on beds yet. Just fish moving back and forth out on the gravel
and back into the deeper holes. Fishing in the river should be good this
weekend and by next weekend should be even better.

There is still alot fish being caught at the mouth but some days it
good and then nothing.

Perch and Walleye fishing is good on Van Ettan Lake. Try minnows
for the perch and leeches for the Walleye.

If you need any detail or updates on the fishing just call or e-mail
me.

Thanks and Tight LInes!

Fishing Report

The Salmon on the Ausable River are still in good numbers at
the mouth. The best bait last night was skein sitting it on the
bottom and waiting on that big bite. Glow spoons and maulers
are also working. There are fish in the lower part of the river
in the deeper holes now. Skein and spawn bags seems to work
the best. The lower river should only get better!!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report
For the last few days the wind has been blowing 15-25
miles per hour. So very few folks out fishing for salmon on
the lake or at the mouth of the Ausable River. The ones
that did fish moved up river to try there luck in the deeper holes
and a few fish have been caught. Best bait in the river is
fresh or cured skein and spawn bags.

Today, the wind is calm and the nights are cooler so the fishing
at the mouth should be good (same lures as last report).
It should be a great weekend for fishing!!

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report
Ok I know it has been a while since my last report but here's the
scoop on the salmon fishing in the Ausable River.
I'll post new reports out every Thursday morning thru the
fall season.

The Salmon are being caught at the mouth pretty regularly
late at night and early morning periods. Glow spoons
(Cleo's, KO Wobblers, and Krocodiles)have been working the best
but the Barramundi's are picking up a few fish too. It's seems
each day is getting better. More and more fish are showing up
at the mouth and the action should really pick-up this weekend
and next week. Folks trolling near the mouth are also doing good early
in the morning.

There are few Salmon in the lower part of the river but nothing
to speak of yet. Give it a couple of weeks and the fish will be in
the deeper holes. Well that's it for know! If you need any detail
or can't wait until the next report please call.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing!

Fishing Report
It's been a while since I put in a fishing report
but here is the latiest info.

The walleye fishing in the lower Ausable has been
good. The fish are being caught on the south peir
with Rapala Countdowns and Husky Jerks. The
boat fisherman are also catching fish trolling and
drifting  nightcrawlers.  A few catfish are also
being caught on nightcrawlers. (this should start
to pick-up with warming temperatures)

There are still steelhead in the river at the Highbanks.
Fish are being caught on black stone flies and nymphs.
The fishing pressure is down so finding a spot should
not be a problem.

The bass on Foote and Cooke are coming off the
beds and fishing close to the shorelines has been
good. The fish are being caught on tube baits
(pumpkin green) and small 4" worms.

Crappie fishing is good on Cooke back in the coves.
Fish are being caught on perch minnows.

If you need any detail info please e-mail or call.
I would be glad to help you out.

That's all for now.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report
The steelhead are still in the Ausable River on the gravel.
The numbers are down but there is less fishing pressure.
Fish are being caught on flies and spawn. As I looked
down at the Highbanks I could see quite a few chomers
still making reds. The water is high but suprisingly it
is clear up top but the lower river is like chocolate
milk. This may explain why the walleye fishing is
ready slowwww at the mouth and lower part of the river.

The bluegill fishing on Foote and Cooke Ponds is
good. Folks are catching fish on minnows and wax
worms in the shallow bays.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report
I am a little late on my report this week. I Had alot of spring
cleaning to do around the store. But anyway here's the
report.

The steelhead in the Upper Ausable River are still on gravel but
fewer fish. The good news is there are fresh chromers still
coming in. Best bet is to look for the deeper gravel
runs for these chromers. Flies and wax worms are
still the best choice. The fat lady is not singing yet so
get out there and give them a try.

The Walleye fishing is very good! Fish are being caught at the mouth and in
the lower part of the Ausable. Countdown Rapala's and Glow jig tipped
with glow jumpin shad baits (plastic) at the mouth. In the Lower
part of the Ausable trolling number 13 Rapala's have been working
the best.

If you need any detail information just E mail me and I will be happy
to respond.

Thanks and Tight Lines!!

Fishing Report
I just got back from my tour of the river and saw a lot
of steelhead being caught. From the dam on the north
side fish are on the gravel in good numbers. Mostly being
caught small tensil flies. (red tensil with white yarn, black
mixed with green tensil) I don't think it mattered.
This is the same at highbanks and boyscout. It looks
like the best bet is flies. The deeper holes close to gravel is also
holding fish. This should be another good weekend for fishing
steelhead on the Ausable River.

The walleye fishing is very good at the mouth of the river and
the lower parts of the Ausable. The guys trolling with #13
Rapala's from River Road Bridge to the rail road tressel have
been doing good after dark.( with limits the last few nights)

At the mouth walleyes are being caught on countdown Rapala's.
It's hot!

As far as the Smell run there is little to talk about. No run as of
today that I am aware of. But most of you know there is
a small window and it could happen anytime.

If you need more detail please e-mail me or call.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report
I took a quick tour of the river Wednesday stopping at a few of
well know deeper holes and gravel runs. There are steelhead on the
gravel and the fisherman are doing well. Most of the folks
I talked to with fish were catching them on flies and egg
sucking leeches. I saw 5 fish caught between 3 guys within
a 40 minutes span. They also released 4 of the five (females) which
was good to see.
The dam down to the DNR ramps (Rea Road) as been good using wax worms
and spawn. But wax worms working the best.

The walleye fishing at night off pier has been good. It seems
to go in spurs then bang they start hitting! Mostly on Rapala
countdowns. If your getting ready for the Walleye opener
there are alot of fish up river and It should be a great opener.

Just to let you know the River Store will be open till 2:00 Am
Friday night and 10:00 PM Saturday night. If your in the area
drop by and I can give a detailed update.

Thanks and Tight Lines!

Fishing Report 04/14/04

The steelhead fishing has been good at the Dam down to
the Rea Road DNR Ramp.  Mostly on wax worms and
corkies. A few guys were using floats rigs with pink jigs tipped
with wax worms. Also there are alot of walleye in the river
getting ready to do there business. Today there were as many
walleye caught as there were steelhead.

I guess the number one question of the day is are the
fish on the beds yet? There a few fish starting to move
on beds but very spotty. With warm rain forecast for
this weekend fish numbers should increase on the gravel.

Thanks and Tight Lines!
